Respirometry – Analysing the oxygen uptake in fish larvae
Welcome to this interactive platform that allows you to prepare for the respirometry lab at your own pace.
This is a simple lab experiment where we use closed respirometry to analyse the metabolic rate of zebrafish eggs and larvae at different temperatures. The data will be used to describe the effects of size and temperature on the metabolic rate.
Metabolic rate is a term that describes the body’s energy expenditure per unit of time. To understand metabolism and measurements of oxygen uptake, you need a background in egg and larval physiology, respiration and oxygen solubility in water. The practical skills including a demonstration of the laboratory exercise are presented. All calculations from raw data from the lab to oxygen consumption per time unit and the oxygen consumption response to temperature are covered. In the written lab report folder, you will find instructions for the written lab report. Here you briefly describe the experimental design, show the equations you used, present you calculations in the results results and discuss the data in a discussion.
